CalgaryHacks - Frequently Asked Questions
Registration
Can I participate online?
You can join online, however one of your group members has to come in person for the judging ceremony for your team to be eligible to compete.
Tiers
I'm a first year student and I don't know if I have the skills to compete in a hackathon.
Due to this exact concern we have set up our Tier 2 prize pool which is exclusive to first year and high school students. This gives students just starting their CS (or similar) journey a way to compete and learn with other students in a similar situation.
Who can be in either tier?
High school and first year post-secondary students can make up teams in tier 2, where anyone not qualified for tier 2 must be in tier 1. Tier 2 teams must be made up of only qualifying tier 2 members -- participating as a tier 2 team with one or more non-qualifying members will result in a disqualification.
I am in 1st year, but I have group members in 2nd year. What tier should I select when submitting?
You should select Tier 1. Groups competing in Tier 2 must be comprised entirely of first year and/or high school students.

Can I reuse code?
Groups may reuse previously written code snippets or other open source code while developing their project. However the project as a whole must be developed within the 24 hours of the competition.
